Miami transit report: 10/2012

October saw continued ridership growth on all modes of Miami-Dade Transit. A record 70,500 passengers rode Metrorail on average on weekdays in October. This record is tied with March 2008 for the highest ridership on Metrorail ever. Great news!

  • Metromover stayed constant at 31,100 average daily passengers in October 2011 as in October 2012.
  • Metrorail grew from 64,400 average daily passengers in October 2011 to 70,500 in October 2012.
  • Metrobus grew from 252,000 average daily passengers in October 2011 to 256,500 in October 2012.

Overall, 2012 figures have made strong gains in passenger counts, rising from the drops experienced in 2009 and 2010 during the Great Recession.

Miami Airport/Central Station:

I’ve been tracking passenger counts at the new airport station since its opening in July, and little growth has occurred. Once Tri-Rail returns to the station and Amtrak service is added once the Miami Central Station is opened in 2014, ridership will surely jump here, but the low figures thus far are surprising.

Ridership at Miami Airport/Central Station:

  • July 2012: 1,766 average daily passengers
  • August 2012: 1,274
  • September 2012: 1,264
  • October 2012: 1,373
